Jackson is the name of the company that Jack built.
Otherwise known as Jack Fice, Jack has been ripping
apart stuff and making it into furniture since he was 13. His grandmother
was an antiques dealer. His grandfather was a master painter who taught
him the fundamentals when he was just a kid. Jack started going to
auctions in the 80's and repairing and refinishing antiques as a hobby.
In 2004, Jack started making furniture part-time in his
garage, selling to shops around Toronto. In January, 2005, he leased a building
on Main Street in Toronto that used to be a gym. Now it serves as Jack's
workshop and showroom on a full-time basis.
Jack travels Ontario, stripping
material from old buildings that are
scheduled for demolition. His furniture and accessory designs
are based on the original form of the salvaged material. For example, the
barn doors off an old stable have been made into sliding closet doors; old
church pews are made into storage benches.
Jack and his team use only basic carpentry tools to
preserve the original feel of the pieces and maintain a sense of
craftsmanship - this ain't no crank-it-out production line. No two pieces
of furniture are the same. Each piece is unique and built and finished by
hand.
